Needle Felting Weekend Workshop
Tryon, NC - Tryon Arts and Crafts will host an Introduction to Needle Felting weekend workshop with instructor Christine Mariotti. The one-day workshop will be held on Saturday, March 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the craft school located on Harmon Field Road.
Dry or needle felting is the process of pushing barbed needles through layers of wool fiber or material. The fibers become firmly attached to one another without the use of sewing thread. A layer of fiber (be it wool roving, wool yarn, or another piece of felt) is in essence fused onto the base fiber or felted fabric. Needle felting is a quick and easy way to add embellishment to plain felted knitting. From simple lines to shapes and more complex designs, needle felting is a great way to add a little more interest to fabric.
The beginning workshop will explain the proper foundation fabric, how to attach the wool fibers using a special needle or a needle felting tool, and which yarns and threads can be used to embellish the weekend’s project, a scarf. Needle felting does not require a sewing machine, but some hand sewing can be used to add additional trims, etc. The needles and basic tools will be provided by the instructor and students will be able to purchase wool roving as needed.
Christine Mariotti has spent much of her life seeking creative outlets for her interest in fine arts and especially the textile/fiber arts. She taught textile arts and fashion illustration for 27 years at Brooks College in Long Beach, California. Christine currently teaches classes and workshops throughout the region. In the last year she has instructed several sessions in textile painting at Tryon Arts & Crafts as well as weekend workshops in silk painting, devore velvet and shibori (Japanese fabric manipulation).
Advance registration for all workshops is required.
